Andrea Simmonds is a painter who focuses on local ecology to inform her practice. Using fieldwork, reference guides, and experience, she explores the intersection of ecology and abstraction. She studies plant relationships with complementary species and interprets this into paintings. Much of her work is focused on the Garry oak ecosystem, capturing some of the rare and unique plants it encompasses.
Andrea studied Liberal Arts and Fine Arts at Bishop’s University (Sherbrooke, QC), graduating with Honours. She recently earned her Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from Emily Carr University of Art and Design (Vancouver, BC). Her work can be found in private collections internationally. She has exhibited in various group and solo shows, including fundraisers for conserving the natural environment.
Andrea respectfully acknowledges she works within the territories of the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples represented by the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations and the W̱SÁNEĆ peoples represented by the Tsartlip, Pauquachin, Tsawout, Tseycum and Malahat Nations.
